Chamomile

The key ingredient in every can of Sleep Toniq is chamomile. The first stage of production involves steeping chamomile flowers in water for over 15 hours. This gentle process extracts its aroma and medicinal qualities, creating a chamomile tea base to which the rest of the ingredients are added.

Despite it being a common nighttime drink, many people know very little about the history, uses, and biology of this remarkable herb.

Chamomile’s History and Cultural Importance:

Chamomile has captivated human interest for centuries, especially in the ancient traditions of Egypt, Greece, and Rome. The Egyptians revered chamomile as a gift from the sun god Ra, using it in medicines and even for embalming. The ancient Greeks valued it for treating digestive and intestinal issues, calling it Chamaimēlon—meaning “Earth Apple” due to its sweet fragrance. Meanwhile, the Romans recognized its calming properties, using it to soothe soldiers’ nerves before battle.

Chamomile’s Biology and Benefits:

The type of chamomile used in Sleep Toniq is scientifically known as Matricaria Chamomilla. It belongs to the Asteraceae family and is native to Europe and Western Asia. Chamomile flowers resemble delicate daisies with bright yellow centers and white petals. These flowers contain a wide range of bioactive compounds, including flavonoids, terpenoids, and volatile oils, which contribute to its signature fragrance and health benefits.

One particular flavonoid compound, called Apigenin, has been the subject of scientific studies due to its potential to treat insomnia, anxiety, and digestive disorders. Apigenin is believed to bind to receptors in the brain that help reduce anxiety and initiate sleep, making chamomile a natural sleep aid.

Chamomile’s Taste and Role in Sleep Toniq:

When brewed, chamomile creates a tea that’s mildly sweet, with an earthy aroma, hints of apple and vanilla, and a soft floral finish. In Sleep Toniq, chamomile not only provides functional benefits but also helps balance the bright acidity of the apple cider vinegar and orange, while complementing the earthy sweetness of honey.

We currently source our chamomile from Egypt, but we’re working with British growers for future batches to make Sleep Toniq a truly British product, celebrating local produce.
